Installing the eBook

The DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY TUTOR eBook is now out of print. If you have previously purchased a copy and are having problems installing it on your computer, please note the following:

DPT-MenuMost users install the Digital Photography Tutor program files on their computer without any difficulties. But if you're having problems viewing or working with the Digital Photography Tutor Welcome Menu Screen that starts up in most Windows computers, you can simply ignore that feature. The 4-page Quick Start Guide that came in your disk box outlines manual installation in Windows, but if you’re having problems, take each of the following steps:

1. From the START button, click on MY COMPUTER.

2. In top menu, click on the icon for FOLDERS view.

3. Make sure you can see the MY DOCUMENTS folder in the left-hand panel (if not, click on your data drive [typically the C or D drive] so that the MY DOCUMENTS folder is listed at the left).

4. In the large right-hand panel, RIGHT-click on the icon for the CD drive that holds the Digital Photography Tutor disk.

5. From the fly-out menu, click on EXPLORE to see the folders on the CD.

6. Drag (copy) the DP TUTOR FILES folder icon from the CD drive contents in the right screen panel to the MY DOCUMENTS folder of your hard drive listed in the left screen panel.

7. Make sure you have the current Adobe Reader and Apple QuickTime Player programs installed in your computer (or follow the Quick Start Guide instructions to install them from the Digital Photography Tutor CD).

8. To view the Digital Photography Tutor eBook after this installation you no longer need to have the CD in your computer. Just use MY COMPUTER to navigate to the MY DOCUMENTS/DP TUTOR FILES folder, and double-click on the “DigitalPhotoTutor.pdf” file.

9. (optional:) To place a quick access shortcut icon on your desktop so that you can start Digital Photography Tutor instantly, use MY COMPUTER to click on the MY DOCUMENTS/DP TUTOR FILES folder and then RIGHT-click on the “DigitalPhotoTutor.pdf” file and from the flyout menu click on SEND TO…DESKTOP (CREATE SHORTCUT).

As you can see, when the Windows XP AutoPlay feature gets in your way, the secret is to RIGHT-click on the CD icon.

By the way, don’t try to take a shortcut and copy the entire Digital Photography Tutor CD to your hard drive. (I already tried that, and it doesn’t work.) Some files in the Macintosh folder on the CD have file names that Windows can’t handle, so the attempt to copy will abort in mid-procedure.

If these instructions don't resolve your problem, please email me describing exactly what your problem is, so I can help. While you’re waiting for a resolution, remember that the Digital Photography Tutor program can always be run direct from the CD, without any installation (although that will not perform as fast as installing and running it from your hard drive).

Please email a description of any installations problems to:
